Passed away on September 9, 2015 at the age of 93.
Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marie Tanner; his four children and respective spouses, Celia Magee and husband Walter of Plano, TX, Allan Tanner and wife Vickie (deceased) of Houston, TX, Adele Tanner Demler of Dallas, TX, Carrie Tanner and husband Gordon Robb of St. Maarten, Dutch West Indies; grandchildren, Brandon Magee and wife Michelle of Plano, TX, Lance Demler of Frisco, TX, Philip Magee and wife Kristen of Frisco, TX, Justin Collett and wife Serena of Chicago, IL, Lark Demler of Dallas, TX, Todd Tanner and wife Jay of Glendale, CA and great grandchildren; Sean Magee and Colin Magee, Cameron Demler and Dylan Demler, and Jayden Tanner and Landon Tanner.
Vernon was the 4th oldest of 11 children. He graduated from Crozier Tech in Dallas, TX in 1940.
He served with honor in the Army Air Corps/Air Force in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) where he rose to the rank of Captain and was a highly decorated combat pilot in the prestigious Flying Tigers flying P-40’s and P-5I’s. He was re-called to action in the Korean War where he once again served with honor. His courageous actions during military duty earned him these medals: Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and Air Medal amongst others. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp on Jan. 19, 1942 in Dallas, Texas.
Upon returning from WWII he graduated from Southern Methodist University. Vernon was known and loved by all as someone with unconditional love, a doting grandfather, sportsman, lover of the outdoors and animals. He took his children and grandchildren on many fishing and camping trips that inevitably went comically wrong. He had his own humorous and affectionate nicknames for just about everyone – friends & family alike; Senior, Bau, Junior, Timey, Hops, Chug, Hoppa’s Hoppa, Chuga Muga, Preciousity, C-Bonet, Sawolka, Toffee, Chili-Bowl, Bada Boo, Tubs, Hoppa’s Boy, Lula Bell, Lulu – and countless others. He created wildly imaginative bedtime stories for his children and grandchildren including The Ghost Ship of Abercrombie and his own version of Lady of the Lake.
Family, friends and even friends of children and grandchildren called him ‘Papa’. He loved to travel with his wife, Marie, and took his children, grandchildren and many of their friends on memorable road trips with them.
He was adored by family, friends, neighbors and all who met him.
