Margie Lee Carter Williams, 95, departed this life to be with the Lord late Wednesday, September 9, 2015 with her family by her side.
Margie was born on November 29, 1919 in Rye Cove, Virginia to the late Loyd and Clara Carter. She was the eighth of nine children and the last surviving member of the family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur in 2008 and her brothers and sisters, Elsie, Francie, Raymond, Agnes, Roy, Jim, Mae and Fred.
Margie was a survivor of the May, 2 1929 tornado that destroyed the Rye Cove School that killed her brother Jim, her teacher, and several other students. She was severely injured, and her recovery took over a year before she was able to return to normal life. She later went on to become valedictorian of her senior class at Rye Cove High School in 1939.
During WW II and for a short period after, Margie worked at Eastman Chemical Company in the yarn division. It was while working at Eastman, that she met her husband, Arthur Fay Williams of Manville, VA, while riding to work on the bus. Arthur had served in the Army during World War II for nearly three years and had recently started working at Eastman in the Tenite plastics division when the couple met. The couple married on April 19, 1947 at the home of Rev. Nathan King in Gate City, VA. They had a daughter, Jenny in 1948 and resided in Rye Cove at the home of her parent’s until 1952.
In 1952, Margie and her family moved to the Morrison City area of Kingsport to set up their home. Margie was an excellent wife, Mother, homemaker, gardener and seamstress. She was an extremely strong lady in many ways and proved that by giving birth to her son, Joel in 1967 at nearly 48 year of age. Margie was very active in the lives of both her children serving as a homeroom mother at Bell Ridge Elementary and also serving in the school clinic during her son’s time there.
Margie also loved the Lord and loved attending church at State Line Baptist Church and formerly at Springdale Baptist Church. In earlier years of her life, she had also served at Riggs Chapel United Methodist Church in Rye Cove while growing up and later at Morrison City Mission and Morrison Chapel UMC near her home. She always had a smile on her face and was a source of encouragement to everyone she met. She also loved watching the Lady Vols, the Atlanta Braves Baseball and eating her favorite chicken at Lynn Garden Restaurant at least once a week.
Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 3 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at State Line Baptist Church, 1905 Flanders Street, Kingsport, TN. A funeral service will be at 3 pm with Pastor Alan Buckles, officiating. Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
