Bartlett & McFarlane Employe Killed Saturday
Raleigh A. Beck, a young man employed with the Barlett & McFarlane Coal company, met his death Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock as the result of an accident which occurred in the Illinois Central coal yards at 4:15….
The Illinois Central has been loaning coal to local dealers during the recent coal famine and Mr. Beck, in company with several companions, was at work loading coal from the huge range in the rail company’s yards for the Bartlett & McFarlane company.
The coal was frozen in places and the men had undermined the pile and were shoveling from underneath……
Life History
Deceased was born in Leafer, Ill., December 6, 1882, and was one of a fmaily of nine children of whom only one, a sister, preceded him to the grave, together with the mother, who died many years ago. When he was ten years old his parents moved to Missouri and settled in Mountain View and then moved back to Illinois, where they lived at their old home, returning later to Missouri. Deceased lived in Hudson some time before coming to Waterloo. He was married in February, 1901, to Miss Elmira Smith of Waterloo. Three children were born to them, but only one, a little son, Edwin, aged three, survives, the others dying in infancy. Besides the wife and baby the surviving relatives are the father, W.H. Beck, Mountain View, Mo., and five brothers and two sisters, George, Mountain View, Mo.; William F., Rockford, Ill.; H.L. Leafer, Ill.; Charles, Albert Lea, Minn.; M.D. Hudson; Mrs. Anna Suman, Hamold, S.D., and Mrs. Lida Huff, Gilstrap, N.D.
Funeral Wednesday
The funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon by Rev. C.H. Stauffacher from the Logan Avenue Evangelical church. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
