Peoria, IL - Eugene R. Alford, 87, of Peoria died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his residence.

Born June 13, 1917, in Lawrence, Kan., to Frederick S. and Dorothy Rothwell Alford, he married Muriel E. Simms on May 29, 1943, in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Richard (and Candy) of Brimfield; one sister, Areta Meyer of Lawrence; one brother, Ted of Perkafie, Penn.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; one brother; and one sister.

He graduated from the University of Kansas with a mechanical engineering degree.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 40 years, retiring in 1981 as an assistant chief engineer in the Mossville plant.

He also farmed in Knox County.

He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Caterpillar Retirees Club.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Republican National Committee.

He was a member of Parkview United Church of Christ.

Cremation will be accorded.
