Born March 13, 1918 in Jericho Mills, she was a daughter of the late Edward A. and Jennie E. (Sheary) Varner. Her husband of 54 years, Doran G. Walters, whom she married on Jan. 18, 1936, died on Sept. 21, 1990.
She is survived by four daughters, Shirley Mahlin of Mifflintown, Carole Seifred of Newark, Del., Connie Reigle of Burnham, and Jacqueline Lucas of Harrisburg, one sister, Alma Stuck of Brookline Manor, Mifflintown, one brother, J. Harold Varner of Huntsville, Ark., seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Pharus, Clair, Merrille, Leonard, Floyd, Blaine, and Roy.
Esther was a busy lady all her life. As a young girl, she helped with house and farm work at home. She began making quilts when she was quite young and continued making them for everyone in her family into her 80's. In the mid 1940's, she was a rug weaver for a short time in Harling's Rug Mill, Mifflin; then was a clerk in Ralph Mayer's grocery store for two years. In 1953 she started to work for the A&P Company, clerking in their Mifflintown grocery store. In 1958 she quit to be a home maker and help take care of her grandchildren, which was often.
In addition to quilting, she enjoyed flower gardening, sewing Barbie doll clothes for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and embroidering tea towels and pillowcases. Her hands were always busy. She loved her family and spending time with them.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mifflin.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown, with Pastor Dan Kerlin officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, Licking Creek Valley.
There will be a viewing on Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
