Audrey May Hughes, 92, of Bryan, passed away April 21, 2011 at Lampstand Nursing Home in Bryan, where she had been a resident for the past 5 years. The family wants to sincerely thank the staff of Lampstand, and Brazos Valley Hospice for the loving care they provided Audrey during her residency at Lampstand.

Audrey was born December 19, 1918 in Rockdale, Texas to Charles N. and Neelly Caffey, of Thorndale, Texas. Audrey was the second of 10 children, with 7 brothers and 2 sisters. On December 19, 1938 Audrey married Cecil Grady Hughes from Hanover, Texas. In 1941, they moved to Houston, Texas where Grady worked for Hughes Tool Company on a defense contract for the US Navy during WWII.

While in Houston, their only child, Arthur Charles, was born in 1943. Soon after WWII, they moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma where they lived until moving to Bryan, Texas in 1952. Later that year, Audrey opened County Club Beauty Lounge which she continued to operate until 1978 when she leased the Beauty Lounge to others who operated it until 2008.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Grady; grandson Charlie Hughes of Lake St. Louis, Mo; parents; brothers Claude Caffey of Thorndale, C. C. (Buck) Caffey of Rockdale, J. W. Caffey and wife Betty of Galena Park, C. M. Caffey and wife Loreen of Deer Park, and Lester Caffey and wife Ladella of Thorndale; sister Edith Caffey Beyer and husband Jack of Stephenville; and brother-in-law Lewis Popham .
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Vicki Hughes, of Bryan; grandson Grady Hughes and his wife, Cherish, of Houston, granddaughter Lisa Aguirre of Kingwood, granddaughter Janice (wife of grandson Charlie Hughes) of Lake St. Louis, MO; great grand children Haley Hughes, Mikaelie Hughes, Ty Hughes, McKinnley Hughes, Mariana Aguirre, and Tucker Hughes; brothers Bobby Caffey and his wife Betty, of Thorndale, Billy Caffey of Rockdale, sister Sybil Popham of Rockdale, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Audrey will be missed by her family and friends. She was a remarkable modern woman who was a business owner, inventor, artist, and sculptor. She loved Jesus and communicated that love to her son as he grew up as well as to her grandchildren in their youth. Audrey was a giver. She went to work early in life giving generously of her time and finances to her younger brothers and sisters. She was also a saver. She saved the coins from her proceeds each day for each grandchild's first year of college which was exactly the amount needed. In lieu of flowers if you would like to contribute in her honor to a memorial fund set up for her deceased grandson's children's first year of college please send a check to the Charlie Hughes Memorial College Fund at any Citibank branch. A memorial service is being scheduled and that information will be provided as soon as it is available
