Robert Thomas Capes was born September 13, 1920 in Grand Forks, ND the son of Earl and Ann (Pender) Capes. He was raised in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. Robert entered the United States Army on April 1, 1941 at Grand Forks. During World War II, he served in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre; the D-Day invasion of Normandy and was awarded a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from military service, with the rank of Sergeant, on December 3, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Robert married Mary H. Hart on June 13, 1943 in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Riverside, CA. Following the war, Robert and Mary lived and worked in several locations throughout the United States. They moved to Grand Forks, where Robert was employed with Custodial Services at the University of North Dakota, until his retirement. Mary preceded him in death on December 5, 2011.

He loved music, enjoyed singing with The Sunshine Band and was a Ticket Taker at University of North Dakota Hockey games. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 6 and the Forty and Eight, "40/8".

He is survived by his sons, Tom (Nancy), Killeen, TX, Jim (Kathy), Kent, WA; his daughters, Rosemary Capes, Grand Forks, ND, Laurie (Gale) Evin, Warren, MN, Roberta (Steve) Arndt, Grand Forks, ND; a brother, Roley (Dorothy), Washington; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; a son, John; a granddaughter, Pamela Kay Socwell and a brother, Richard.

Memorial Mass: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2015 in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Family Greeting: One hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Tuesday.
Interment: Calvary North Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.

Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion, Post 6; The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1874; The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 2 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
