Alberta A. Kauffman Windom
Oct. 10, 1943 — Jan. 12, 2012

Our mom went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 12, following complications from surgery. She passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, with her family at her side.

Alberta “Bert” was born Oct. 10, 1943, in Albany to John and Malinda Kauffman, and was the youngest of 11 children. In 1948, her family moved to the Crescent Valley area of Corvallis, where Bert attended Mountain View Elementary School and Corvallis High School.

While attending Corvallis High, she met the love of her life, Lee “Butch” Windom. Butch and Bert were married April 22, 1960, and enjoyed 51 years of marriage. They lived in and raised their family in the Corvallis area until they moved to Tangent in 1980.

She was a loving and dedicated wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her children, grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces looked to her for guidance, and benefited from her love and wisdom.

After her children were raised, she worked at Roger’s Restaurant in Albany for 16 years. In their retirement years, Butch and Bert enjoyed cruises to the Western Caribbean and Hawaii, along with a six-week tour of the United States.

Bert also loved the annual family hunting trip to the Walker Rim area of Central Oregon, being with family at the yearly Kauffman and Windom camp-outs, participating in bowling leagues with her husband and friends, and attending her grandchildren’s school performances and athletic events.

Bert was an avid collector of Beanie Babies and McDonald’s toys, which she loved sharing with her grandchildren. She also had a lifelong collection of elephant knickknacks, and had recently become a Facebook enthusiast, where she enjoyed gaming and staying in touch with family.

She is survived by her husband, Lee “Butch;” son Doug and wife Linda Windom of Corvallis; son David Windom of Albany; and daughter Dianna and husband Dale Hlavinka of Dallas.

There are seven surviving grandchildren, Devin and wife Molly Hlavinka of Stayton, Heather Windom of San Jose, Calif., Zach and wife Marrin Hlavinka of Wilsonville, Kyle Hlavinka of Dallas, Justin Windom of Corvallis, Katelyn Windom of Corvallis, and Tanner Hlavinka of Dallas; and two great-grandchildren, Allie and Sabby Hlavinka of Stayton.

Also surviving her are sisters Erma Hershberger of Sun City, Ariz., Shirley Gerig of Milwaukie, Millie Wyatt of Willits, Calif., and Judy Cavanagh of Milwaukie; and brothers Ken Kauffman of Corvallis, Jay Kauffman of St. Helens, Bob Kauffman of Colton, and John Kauffman Jr. of Coos Bay. There are also 63 nephews and nieces, and 62 great-nephews and -nieces.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter MeKenzie; her parents; and brothers Duane and Don.
