Quinn, Marion Gutke
Marion Gutke Quinn, who retired in 1986 after serving nine years as the manager of the Phoenix Zoo gift shop, died Saturday (Nov. 15) in her apartment at Arizona Grand Senior Living Community in Phoenix. She was 94.

Her long service in retail sales began in 1968 when she was hired as a clerk at Verkamps Gift Shop on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. She later managed the gift shop at the Squire Motor Inn in Tusayan, Ariz. and two gifts shops in Mt. Rainier National Park, Wash.

Mrs. Quinn was born in Shelley, Idaho, on Jan. 8, 1920, to William Martinus Gutke and Edith Augusta Wadsworth Gutke, the fifth of six children. She graduated from Shelley High School then went to work for Western Union in Idaho Falls. The company later transferred her to the famous ski resort of Sun Valley, Idaho, where she met and married Bernard Francis Quinn in 1941. Among the wedding guests were her close friends, American novelist Ernest Hemingway and his wife, well-known war correspondent Martha Gellhorn.

Mrs. Quinn moved to Palm Springs after her husband was hired as manager of the Ambassador Hotel then returned home to Shelley with the first of four sons while her husband was stationed overseas with the Navy's Seabees during World War II. After her husband's discharge in 1946, she began honing her skills as the wife of a husband who had chosen resort-hotel management as a career.

Between 1946 and 1956, she spent her winters in Cedar City, Utah, her summers on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, where she also served as postmistress. By 1952 she had also given birth to three more sons. Eventually her nomadic treks to national parks would take her to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, back to Grand Canyon, once again to Sequoia and back to Grand Canyon.

When her traveling days were over, she established her roots in Phoenix, purchased a condo unit and went to work at the Phoenix Zoo until her retirement. In her later years she became an avid artist, taking lessons in oil painting and sharing her masterpieces with her four sons.

Mrs. Quinn was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Launa Inez, Harriet, and Mildred; brothers, Wayne and William and her husband, Bernard.

She is survived by her sons, Donald, of El Centro, Ca.; William Patrick (Tessy), of Cortez, Colo., John, of Page and Edward, of Phoenix, two grandchildren, Sean Quinn of San Diego and Ashley Quinn of El Centro, Ca. and a great-grandson, Austin James Quinn of El Centro.

Graveside services will be held at Grand Canyon Pioneer Cemetery on the South Rim, where she will be buried next to her beloved husband.
