Elson Spencer Bishop was born at Readsboro, Vermont, July 28, 1833, and passed away at Gravette, Ark., March 24, 1913, at the age of 79 years. Mr. Bishop lived at Readsboro, Vt., until young manhood. He was married to Martha Cornelia Phelps in 1854. They moved to Wisconsin in 1855, living there until 1869, when Mrs. Bishop's health failing, they, with their two children, Frank S. and Inez M., went to Tennessee where Mrs. Bishop soon passed away. Later Mr. Bishop was married to Eva L. Young, of Sparta, Tenn. In March, 1876, they moved to Cloud County, Kans., locating on their homestead, seven miles northeast of Glasco, where their four children were born, Emma M., who died in infancy; Sumner E., of Fairview, Okla.; Ralph W., of Lincoln, Kans., and Nellie C., of Kansas City. In addition to the ones previously mentioned the deceased leaves one brother, N.E. Bishop, of Barnard, Kans., and a sister, Mrs. Elvira Thayer, of Readsboro, Vt.
Mr. Bishop was a firm believer in the immortality of the soul and future progression. Those who knew him best are those who love and appreciate him most. Gentleness, kindness and loving charity dominated his life and days. His knowledge of future life enabled him to live in serene joy while here and look forward with gladness toward the higher life. May his example abide with us.
The body was shipped here for burial; funeral services were held from the Leroy Bishop home yesterday morning and interment made in Delphos Cemetery.
