Mrs. Osborne, the former Agnes Devens of Boston, was the wife of Thomas Mott Osborne, celebrated prison reformer and mayor of Auburn, NY. She married Osborne in 1886, two years after his graduation from Harvard. At the time he had just assumed the presidency of the farm machinery manufacturing business founded by his father, and had not yet embarked on the career in politics and prison reform that made him famous. Sons Charles, David*, Lithgow, and Robert were born to the couple during their 10-year marriage, which ended with Mrs. Osborne's premature death at age 30. Her husband survived her by more than 30 years, and was buried beside her in the Osborne Family plot after his death in 1926. Their graves are marked by a dark-toned double headstone, Mrs. Osborne's being on the right in the photo.
