Elizabeth “Abby” Cummings was born on Sept. 3 1896 at the family home on 4th Ave. in Williamsport, Pa., the daughter of Nellie and Frank Cummings. She attended Williamsport High School and graduated in 1914. After high school she worked for her father, attorney Frank P. Cummings, the city solicitor of Williamsport, whose office was on W. 4th St.
Around 1917 she accepted a job offered by Dr. “Tommy” Thompson the director of the James V. Brown Library. Extremely capable she became the treasurer of the library and on two occasions was asked by the board of directors to become director until a new director was found. She attended and took notes for every library board meeting until she retired in 1971 at the age of 75. She died at the age of 96 at the Williamsport Home and is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
