In 1784 at two years of age, Joshua traveled in a covered wagon with his nine brothers and sisters down through the Valley of Virginia to their new home on Mossy Creek, Augusta County, Virginia. In 1791 Joshua moved with his family to a new home on Wilson Creek near Nimrod Hall in Bath County. Joshua married Martha (Patsy) McDanald daughter of Samuel and Margaret McDanald. At a young age Martha and a younger sister were captured during an Indian raid. However, they were returned to their parents unharmed later as a result of an Indian Treaty.
Sometime around the year 1809, Joshua and Martha settled into the Indiana Territory where they took up the third claim in present day Fayette County, near Connersville. They were the parents of nine children.
Joshua Jr. (2) was born shortly after his father and brother died of typhoid fever. The new son was named Joshua in honor of his father and brother.
Joshua and Martha had a large number of descendants, many of whom moved on to other counties of Indiana and some moving into other states. Fifty of their grandchildren and nearly two hundred of their great-grandchildren were recorded in William A. Porter's book, "The Descendants of Peter Porter--An Emigrant of 1621", written in 1937.
