Alexamder Van Horn, son of Alexander and Mary Wherry Van Horn was born in West Wheatfield Township, Indiana Co, PA 18 Jan 1832. His father served in the War of 1812. His Grandfather Isaiah, a drummer, and Great Grandfather Henry, a Captain, both served in the Revolutionary War.

Alexander married Mary E. Liston daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Keller Liston of Listonburg, Somerset Co, PA and they were the parents of three children; Alexander (f), Adelie (f) and Thomas (m).

On 21 Feb 1862 at about 29 years of age he heard his Country calling and enrolled for duty at Harrisburg, PA, as a Private in Co I, 11th PA Reserve Infantry, 40th Volunteers.

At Gains Mill, Hanover Co, VA, on June 27, 1862 " the third of the Seven Days' Battles, Gen. Robert E. Lee renewed his attacks against Porter's V Corps, which had established a strong defensive line behind Boatswain's Swamp north of the Chickahominy River. Porter's reinforced V Corps held fast for the afternoon against disjointed Confederate attacks, inflicting heavy casualties. At dusk, the Confederates finally mounted a coordinated assault that broke Porter's line and drove his soldiers back toward the river. Alexander Van Horn was killed in action and his body was never returned home.......An IMO VA Marker is located in the Addison Cemetery, Somerset Co, PA at his daughter, Adelie Van Horn Frazee's, grave site..


Mary E Van Horn remarried to Otho Speelman and is buried in the Addison PA Cemetery 1870 Census indicates Mary was married to Otho Speelman and shows Adelie Van Horn (f) and Thomas Van Horn (m)

IMO Government Marble Headstone located in Addison Cemetery at grave of daughter Adelie Van Horn Frazee. Marker installed Sept 2015 along with a bronze GAR grave flag holder.
