1st opened a door for the reception of members and received Brother Moses Birdwell by Experience…

Records show that Moses Birdwell lived in Franklin County, Georgia 1791-1812 at which time he moved to Madison Co., AL. The records of Moses Birdwell in Alabama from 1812-20s are not easy to separate from those of his nephew Moses, the son of John.
On April 4, 1812 (1st Saturday of April), Moses Birdwell was accepted "by experience" into membership of Enon Church, so apparently the one on the 1817 church record is John's brother rather than his son although that is questionable.

1818: James Isbell (who married John Birdwell's daughter Elizabeth) sold Moses Birdwell land in Limestone Co., AL. We know this was Elizabeth's uncle because her brother Moses married then moved to Tennessee and died after having two children. The 1820 Limestone County census shows this Moses Birdwell had a household of 10.
We also know that Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell was not a daughter of Moses and his first wife because 1850-70 censuses say she was born 1797 in Tennessee where John lived while his brother Moses lived in Georgia 1791-1812.

24 Feb. 1818, Limestone County, Alabama: Moses Birdwell was assigned 158.60 acres by James Isbell (#1156) at cost of $317.20. Moses Birdwell paid $77.30 in stock and cash on 23 Feb. 1818. On 16 Oct. 1818 James Isbell completed the transfer of land to Moses Birdwell. (Recorded in Old Land Records, Limestone Co.; cited in Birdwell Family Tree by Velma Schonder.) This Moses Birdwell was the uncle of James Isbell's wife Elizabeth Birdwell. In 1820, Moses Birdwell joined Round Island Baptist Church, Limestone Co., AL. This church was established before 1816 and constituted 1817, located on the Henderson Plantation on Round Island Creek. Not known if Isbells were members.


4 Sept. 1821, Moses Birdwell received certificate #664 in Limestone Co. outlining the installment payments he needed to receive the patent on the land he had purchased from James Isbell. Moses Birdwell bought the land with aid from Congress in a law that gave relief to purchasers of public lands prior to 1 July 1820. In 1821 Moses Birdwell owed $237.90.
27 Sept. 1822: Moses Birdwell paid the balance owing on this date and received the final certificate for this land, certificate #1156.

25 Oct.1826: Moses Birdwell sold for $1000 to Stephen Flinn, both of Limestone Co., the land he had been assigned by James Isbell (Limestone Deed Book 2, pp.278-9; Alabama Records by Pauline Jones Gandrud, vol.24, p.45). The land was the SW 1/4 of sec. 3, twp.4, range 4W. Moses Birdwell signed, wife Hannah making her mark. The same day, Moses Birdwell and Hannah verified the deed, and it was recorded. This land was near the present community of Tanner. So in just eight years, Moses tripled his money selling this land.

Before 1830 Moses Birdwell had moved to Jackson County where his nieces Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell and Sarah Birdwell Isbell had moved; their brother Moses Birdwell having moved to Tennessee. In 1838 the part of Jackson County where Uncle Moses Birdwell settled fell into Marshall County near Grant. He was bankrupt a few years later and moved to Texas where he died in 1848 in Hopkins County, Texas.

…Resolved that Jonses Fork has a rehearing with Brothers John & Moses Birdwell on the first Saturday in Apr. next." (When there was a controversy or disagreement between churches the committee appointed someone to investigate, and such was the case with the Jones Fork Church, and John and Moses were selected to investigate it.
