Levi was born about 1818 possibly in Poughkeepsie, NY (his obituary states "of Poughkeepsie"). He married Mary Jane Millikin in 1841 in Ottawa, Illinois. They had five children: two daughters, Hannah and Florence who died in infancy, two sons, Samuel and Smith, and another daughter,Lydia, who was born after his death. Levi died of Cholera near St Joseph, Missouri while traveling to California during the time of the 1849 gold rush. The site of his grave is unknown but lies within a few miles of St Joseph, Missouri along the military road to Fort Kearney.
