Kokomo Tribune, Kokomo, Howard, Indiana, Monday, August. 11, 1941, page 5. Oldest Resident Is 95.

Frank Bearss, who has been a continuous resident of Peru longer than any man now living, observed his 95th birthday yesterday in the house where he was born Aug. 9, 1846. The residence, an imposing Colonial type structure on Broadway in Ridgeview, adjacent to the Wabash Railway Employes' hospital, was the scene of a quiet family gathering.

Among those present were Mr. Bearss' two living children. Mrs. Emma Muhifeld, of New York, and Braxton Bearss, of Peru, joint senator of Miami and Howard counties in the state legislature. Another son was Brig. Gen. Hirim(sic) I. "(Hiking Hiram") Bearss, noted Marine officer of the Spanish-American and World wars, who was killed in an automobile accident three years ago.

The Bearss family always had been prominent in Republican politics, both Mr. Bearssa and his father, Daniel R. Bearss, having served several terms in the state legislature in the early days of the state.

During the Civil War, Mr. Bearss was a member of a company of youths recruited here to fight the Morgan raiders. They were taken to Cincinnati, but the company later was disbanded without seeing action after the anticipated raids failed to materialize.

Still active, comparatively healthy and keen of mind and eyesight, Mr. Bearess is a voracious reader of current events, and almost daily in pleasant weather may be found in the lobby of the Bearss hotel, which was founded by members of his family.

Kokomo Tribune, Kokomo, Howard, Indiana, Monday, March 9, 1942, page 7. Peru. Franklin Bearss, Prominent Peru Resident, Dies. Father of Senator Stricken Suddenly.

Franklin W. Bearss, 95, one of Peru's oldest residents and member of one of northern Indiana's most prominent families, died suddenly of heart disease this afternoon in the historic Bearss homestead in Ridgeview. His death occurred in the house where he was born on Aug. 9, 1846.

The deceased was the father of state Senator Braxton H. Bearss, of Peru, and of the late Brig. Gen. Hiram I. ("Hiking Hiram") Bearss, noted hero of the United States Marines in World War I and the Spanish American War. Gen. Bearss died Aug. 26, 1928, of injuries received in an automoblie accident.

A son of Daniel R. Bearss, Miami county pioneer, merchant and founder of the Bearss hotel, and Emma A. (Cole) Bearss, the deceased owned for many years the hotel which still bears his family's name. As a youth in 1865, he served for a short time in a special unit of the Union army, which was organized to repel the Morgan raiders.

Later he was elected to the state legislature, and served for two terms, beginning during the administration of Gov. Winfield T. Durbin. He was always active in Republican politics, and during his prime wielded powerful influence in affairs of the party, both in Miami county and throughout the state. Major portion of his time during his active years, however, was devoted to supervision of his real estate holdings.

Surviving besides Sen. Bearss are two other children, Mrs. Oscar O. Muhifeld, of Englewood, N.J., and Miss Lucy H. Bearss, at home. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Miss Emma A. Muhifeld and Frank Bearss Muhifeld, both of Englewood, N.J. and Mrs. Frederick Ehwing(sic), of Orlando, Fla.

On Jan. 17, 1872, Mr. Bearss married Desdemona Iddings, member of another prominent pioneer family. She died July 28, 1923.

The body was taken to the Allen funeral home, 68 Est Third street, where it was announced tonight that funeral arrangements had not been completed.
