Edward Lee Hayes, 88, of Jack Hayes Road, Boone, died August 20, 2015, at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation in Boone. He was born December 23, l926 in Watauga County. After serving in the US Army during WWII, Lee returned to the family farm to raise tobacco, cabbage, cattle, horses, and put up hay for his needs and for others. After retiring from the physical plant at ASU, he enjoyed riding the wagon train with grandchildren and neighborhood kids, and raising fox dogs, coon dogs and beagles.
He is survived by his wife, of 67 years, Iva Lee Jones Hayes; son, Joseph Edward Hayes and wife, Jerry Sue, of Boone; daughters, Judy Greene and husband, Dean, of Deep Gap and Evelyn (Sissy) Moore and husband, George Marshall, of Boone; five grandchildren, Chris Hayes, Brandy Eldreth, Ronald Moore, Melissa Cook, and Nicole James; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; sister, Grace Greene, and brother, Jack Hayes and wife, Glada, all of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Faye Ragan; and one brother, John Hayes.
Funeral services were held at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Delmar James and Rev. Burl Greer. Graveside services at Mountlawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
