At the age of 18, Arba Benson, Jr. enlisted at Lowell, Michigan on 18 December 1863 into the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He was mustered in on 5 January 1864. His name is on the 25 January 1864 list of soldiers from Grand Rapids being forwarded to join Company D in the field. A muster roll dated 30 April 1864 identifies that "recruit from Depot, joined Co. Feb. 2, 1864." He was promoted on June 10, 1865 to Artificer. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on 22 September 1865 and received an honorable discharge at Jackson, Michigan a few days later.

The place and date of birth of Arba Benson, Jr. is found in a notarized statement made by Arba when applying for renewal of his pension. The place and date of death of Arba Benson, Jr. is found on letter from the Michigan Soldier's Home to the Pension Office.

Arba married Kate Sterzik on 5 November 1876 and apparently they separated in about 1888. They were the parents of three sons, Arthur who was born 17 August 1877, Edward who was born 1 March 1879, and Milo who was born 23 June 1880. It is not known, but it is surmised that the three sons of Arba and Kate likely went to live with their mother when their parents separated. This is suggested by their ages at the time combined with the fact that Kate and son Arthur were buried in the same cemetery plot suggesting a closer relationship later in life.
