Adam Chávez, age 77, a lifelong resident of Belen, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2015.
Adam was born August 23, 1937 in Belén, New Mexico to Fermin and Adela Chávez. Adam proudly served in the New Mexico National Guard and was a member of Our Lady of Belén Catholic Church.
In 1979, after working as a butcher in Albuquerque for 30 years, he started his own grocery business in Belén, Adam’s Market. His business prospered and became a cornerstone of the community. Adam retired from the business in 2004 but remained active in the community, fostering children and serving on the Board of Directors for MyBank.
Adam was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and gardener. Adam loved to travel and enjoyed the casinos. Above all, Adam loved his family and cherished time spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Adam was preceded in death by his father, Fermin Chávez, his mother, Adela Chávez, his brothers, Fred Chávez, Luciano Chávez and Guillermo Chávez, his sisters, Lena Liquiore, Lucy Guerrero and Helen Chávez and his granddaughter, Kathleen Barger.
Adam is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Chávez, his children, Karen Chávez and Andre Edward Chávez and foster son, James Richey, step-children, Elaine Barela and her husband, Kenneth and Joseph Gabaldón and his wife, Arlene, grandchildren, John Adam Barger, Jacob Barger, Renee Chávez, Matthew Chávez, Amber Barela, Joseph Gabaldón Jr., Brian Gabaldón, Kobe Gabaldón, Derrik Herrera and Dillon Herrera, great-grandchildren, Kenneth Sánchez Barela, Izaiah Adams, Jordan Adams, Alexandra Chávez, Dominic Ward, Jacob Barger Jr., Julian Barger, Kathleen Barger, Lisa Cervantes, Jeremy Mascarena and John “Boo” Barger, brother, George Chávez, sisters, Stella Chávez Fuentes, Rita Romero and Margaret Gallegos and her husband, Fred and numerous nephews and nieces.
All services will be held at Our Lady of Belén Catholic Church beginning on Thursday, August 20, 2015 with a viewing at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. A final viewing will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Belén Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Steve Romero, Jerry Baca, John Adam Barger, Jacob Barger, Joseph Gabaldón, Kenneth Barela, Matthew Chávez and Joseph Gabaldón Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be Max Torres, Placido García and Porfirio Silva.
