Alphonso D. was born in Wisconsin, the son of Henderson and Lavinia (Woodworth) Winans. The family came to South Dakota in 1883, and settled in Hyde County.

On August 24, 1896, A.D. married Emily (Moss). They were the parents of five children: Ralph H. b. March 1899; Fred R. b. Jan. 1904; Marjorie E. b. Nov. 1912; Reva M. b. Sept. 1914; and an infant son, 1897.

According to the "History Of Hyde Co, SD", A.D. served as Hyde Co. Sheriff 1899-1902.

A.D. built and ran a livery barn on 2nd Street in Highmore until the end of the horse and buggy era in the 1920's.

He passed away January 21, 1951 in Hyde Co., SD.
