According to his marriage record, Albert was the son of John Aeppli and Anna Western. Albert gave census takers three different immigration years--1880, 1883 and 1890. He would have been in his twenties when he arrived. They appear to have settled in Illinois. As of 16 Aug 2015, there are thirteen people with the Aeppli surname buried in Illinois, all of them in Cook County, none of them with the first names John or Anna, suggesting that Albert came to the United States on his own or perhaps with a sibling.

On 4 Feb 1895, Albert married Caroline "Carrie" Martin in Kankakee Co., Illinois. Carrie was the daughter of French Canadians Toussant Martin and Louise Belange (best guess from the variety of spellings out there for her surname).

They settled in Saint Anne, Kankakee County, and a year after they married, they welcomed the first of their two children, son William Albert, born on 14 Aug 1896. Daughter Rachel Anna joined the family on 5 Sep 1899.

I found the family on the 1900 Census, living in Saint Anne, where Albert, aged 40, was earning a living as a painter. Carrie (enumerated as Caroline), aged 40, reported that she had had two children, and that both had survived to the census year. Indeed, home with their parents were son Albert Jr., aged 3, and daughter Anna (aka Rachel), aged 8 months.

By the time the 1910 Census was taken, the family had moved east to Polk Township, Marshall County, Indiana. Albert, aged 50, was giving farming a go. Carrie, aged 50, again reported that both of her children were living. There with them were Albert Jr., aged 13, and Rachel, aged 10.

The 1920 Census situated the family in Plymouth's Center Township, Marshall County. Albert, aged 61, gave laborer as his occupation. Carrie, aged 60, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were William (aka Albert Jr.), aged 22 and working as a mail carrier, and Rachel, aged 20.

Four months after that census was enumerated, Albert and Carrie's daughter Rachel married Roy E. Carlson on 19 Jun 1920 in Marshall County. Roy was the son of Carl Albert Carlson and Gertrude Fitz.

The year 1930 found Albert, aged 70, and Carrie, aged 69, still in Plymouth's Center Township. Albert was doing some carpentry work. Son William, aged 33, was there to help out his parents, and still had his mail carrier's job. Daughter Rachel and husband Roy Carlson were living at bit to the northeast in Mishawaka, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Roy, aged 32, was working as a repairman in a garage. In 1924 they had welcomed daughter Dorothy. Dorothy appears to have been Albert and Carrie's only grandchild.

Sadly, the year before the 1940 Census, after forty four years together, death parted the couple, claiming Albert. Carrie, widowed, aged 79, appeared without him on the 1940 Census, still in Plymouth. Head of household was son William, aged 43, still delivering the mail to Plymouth's residents. Also there was Albert and Carrie's daughter Rachel Carlson, aged 40. She reported that she was divorced. Daughter Dorothy, aged 16, was there with her.

Four years after that census, Carrie departed this earth in 1944 at age 83. Her children had her laid to rest next to her helpmate and companion in life.
