Funeral service for Mary Behrends, 70, of Buffalo Center will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Buffalo
Center. She died May 1, 1999, at her home. Rev. Bill Peake will officiate. Music will be provided by a ladies trio, with Marlene Krull serving as organist. Casket bearers will be Billy Smith, Ray Bierle, Curt Bashans, Miff Wessels, John Oftedahland RandySwalve. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.
Mary Behrends, the daughter of John and Sigrid (Nelson) Adams, was born Sept. -19, 1928, in Burlington. She graduated from Muscatine High School and then went to Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant for a semester. She worked for a bakery, and then for Schaeffer Pen Company in Mt. Pleasant as an inspector for about three years.
Aug. 18,1951, she was united in marriage to Lester Behrends at Winnebago, Minn. To this union, three children were born. After the couple were married they moved to Mankato, Minn. Lester later re-enlisted in the Navy, and at that time she moved back to Mt. Pleasant. Her and their two daughters joined Lester in Guam after he had been there eight months. The couple spent 10 months there be fore moving to Buffalo Center in 1955 When the bowling alley opened in 1960 she worked in the restaurant for several years, and was secretary-treasurer for her
league.The couple enjoyed fishing and spent a week each year at Remer, Minn., and spent several weeks at Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada, on Lake of the Woods.
She taught Bible School and sang in the choir. Behrends also enjoyed riding her bike, walking the dog and working in her garden. Recently she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles in the paper.
Survivors include her husband Lester of Buffalo Center; three daughters, Marcella and her hus­band Stephen Carrillo, Marsha Behrends, and Marlys Gardipe, all of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandchildren; two brothers; Robert Adams and his wife, Jen, of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Dale Boren and his wife, Leola, of Marion; and one sister, Joann and her husband,
Bob Rullestad of Des Moines.
She was preceded in death by her parents: three brothers, Lewis, Don and Richard and one sister, Evelyn .
