Private First Class Almeida was a member of the 1st Psychological Warfare Company, Eighth Army. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on July 6, 1953. He was presumed dead on July 7, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Almeida was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

"BRISTOL - Fifty-four years ago, Bernard "Butch"Almeida died on a Korean battlefield. His family never knew that for certain — until the Army came calling two days ago. Initially declared Missing in Action, Mr. Almeida died when the Jeep he was driving in was ripped apart by a mortar."
The Army changed his status to Killed in Action a year after the incident, but according to one of his two surviving relatives, his parents, relatives and friends never knew. Even today, a memorial in his honor at the corner of Hope and Washington streets honors Bernard "Butch" Almeida, Missing in Action.
This week brought new pain, yet peace, for at least one relative who remembers "Butch" Almeida fondly...

Weekend: Memorial Day events
In historic Bristol, a wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at the Veterans Home, 9 Court St., at noon. On Monday, Bristol's formal Memorial Day ceremony will include a parade on Hope Street. There will be a plaque and wreath-laying for Bernard "Butch" Almeida, whose status was recently changed from Missing in Action to Killed in Action unrecoverable.
