Leonhard(t) Bihler, son of Johann Jacob Bihler and Anna Maria Vetter, was born 10 May 1819 at Kleineislingen, Göppingen, Stuttgart, Baden-Wurtemberg, Germany. He was a weaver. He married Anna Margarete Mack 17 August 1846 at Kleineislingen. She was born 24 February 1822 at Jebenhausen. They emigrated to the United States in 1847 (a handwritten note in the Family Register at Kleineislingen indicates they went to America in 1847) with her parents, brothers and sisters. Leonhard had four sisters; they all remained in Germany though one visited him in America. The spelling of the surname Bihler was anglicized to Behler and Leonhard(t) to Leonard upon arrival to America. The family first resided in Crawford County, Ohio, near Bucyrus where Leonard rented land. In the 1850 U.S. Census, they were at Chatfield, Crawford County, Ohio.
In 1854 they moved to Kent County, Michigan, where Leonard obtained eighty acres of heavily timbered land under a soldier's claim. At that time he had $300, $175 of which was used to pay for the land. They lived on the remainder until he erected a one room log cabin, all made out of rough material and put up with ax and auger. The family occupied this log cabin until about 1880 when a frame house was built. Adam Frederick, a son, occupied the log house from 1881 to 1888. The family farm was 80 acres S 1/2, NW 1/4, Section 34, Lowell Township and 40 acres SE 1/4, NE 1/4, Section 33, Lowell Township. In 1893 the homestead passed into the hands of his son Adam Frederick Behler; in 1915 it passed into the hands of Adam Frederick's sons Allen Leonard and John Elmer Behler. In 1930 it was owned by Allen Leonard Behler. Then by Allen's daughter Arlene and her husband Willis Hatch. It is designated a centennial farm.
Leonard was compelled to work out for a livelihood and engaged in any kind of work he was able to obtain. During the war and in the winters he found employment weaving, the trade he had followed in Germany. He spoke German even after moving to the United States and was a member of what became the German Methodist Church of West Lowell. The Methodist class was first held at his house and he always held church offices. Margaret Mack Behler had converted to the German Methodist Church while living in Ohio. He died 18 September 1897 at his farm near Lowell, Michigan. Anna Margarete Mack Behler died there 19 April 1907.
