It is somewhat hard to interpret the last line of the headstone engraving. I believe it states James died aged 54 years, 5 months and 1 day. If correct that would make his approximate birth date 11/14/1761. I say approximate as headstone engraving can be subject to error.

He was the son of Robert Hemphill b. May 24 1731 and died Feb 17, 1818 and Eleanor Clark, who died Sept 21, 1808. Robert was the son of Nathaniel Hemphill, who died July 10, 1780, and Mrs. Isabella Robinson. James and Ruth also had a son by the name of Robert Hemphill born 23 Mar 1796, who married Lucy Kimball.
