CHARLES HOFFMAN DISCOVERED DEAD
Charles Leonard Hoffman, widely known and prominent citizen of Petersburg, was found dead on Friday afternoon, October 19, 1944, at 4:05 o'clock in Logan Township. It is believed he had been dead about four hours when his body was found by his son-in-law, Harry Lang, and his grandson, Charles Lang, who had gone to hunt for him when he did not return home. Coroner E. Blair Shore of Huntingdon was summoned, and it was found that Mr. Hoffman had suffered an acute heart attack, in all probability due to over-exertion. Mr. Hoffman had left his home in the forenoon about 10 o'clock to got to the woods above the Petersburg Cemetery for a clothes-line pole. He had made about three or four strikes with his axe at an oak tree, and apparently felt the attack coming on. He had laid his axe down and sat down alongside the tree which he was chopping, where he passed away. His sudden death came as a shock to the community in which he had lived all his life, participating in church, civic and other activities toward bettering his home-town. Charles L. Hoffman was born in Petersburg, April 28, 1867, hence he was aged at the time of death 78 years, 5 months and 21 days. He was a son of John H. and Melinda Hoffman, both deceased. His wife, Blanche (Rorer) Hoffman, died about eighteen years ago. Until he retired thirteen years ago, he was employed as a railway mail clerk on the Pennsylvania Railroad, traveling between Pittsburgh and New York. All his life he was a member of the Methodist Church, and for many years was a member of the official board. He was also keenly interestedin Sunday School work and had served as a staff member of the District 3 board. A couple of years ago he retired from the school board after serving faithfully on that body for may years. At the time of his death he was secretary of the Petersburg Borough Water Commission. He is survived by two children: Mrs. Dorothy Lang, with whom he made his home, and Mrs. Pauline Smith, of Belleville. He is also survived by five grandchildren and one sister, Miss Jane E. Hoffman, of Petersburg. The body was prepared for burial at Temple's Funeral Home in Petersburg.
