Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” July 27, 1964:
William E. Martin, 76, of 510 N. Benton, died Sunday at 3:15 a.m. at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. He had been in failing health for several years.
Mr. Martin had been a foreman at local millworks, retiring in 1956.
He was born in Postville Jan. 27, 1888, the son of Edgar and Mary Shipton Martin. He had been a resident of Ottumwa for 35 years.
He attended Pacific University at Forest Grove, Ore.; was a graduate of Upper Iowa University at Fayette and attended Mount Angel Monastery in Oregon.
He was a second lieutenant in the Army in World War 1 and was a member of the Methodist Church and World War Barracks 1510.
His marriage to Phila Rounds took place June 13, 1917 in Huron, S.D. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, William Martin of Boone, Jack Martin of Unionville and Edgar Martin of Red Oak; three daughters, Mrs. Abbie Bauer of Ottumwa, Mrs. Margaret Dayton of Flourisant, Mo., and Mrs. Ruth Ann Broich of Aurora, Ill.; 34 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and four sisters.
Three sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Willard Street Methodist Church with the Rev. David Ash, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with a military service at the graveside.
The body is at the Jay Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion.
