Gladys attended Sunday School at the country school and
then joined the Congregational Church in 1933, where she was an active member and was baptized as an adult.
On October 15, 1935, Gladys was united in marriage with Clarence Heitland at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. They resided on a farm north of Buffalo Center for 4 years, then moved northeast of Buffalo Center where they lived until 1976 when they retired to their new home they had built in Buffalo Center.
Gladys enjoyed time spent with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making quilts, crocheting, sewing projects, gardening and playing games with her friends. For many years she provided transportation for friends needing a ride and delivering meals to shut-ins. She worked with Women's Fellowship Missionary Work Group and was a willing helper at the Senior Center.
Gladys became a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in January of 2002. On Thursday, July 03, 2003, Gladys passed away at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Leona and her husband Carroll Van Hove of Buffalo Center; Gerald (Jerry) and his wife Laura Heitland of Clear Lake; Donna and her husband Dale Bredeson of Estherville; Judy Hanson of Trenton, Missouri; and Dale and his wife Carol Heitland of Forest City; 12 grandchildren: Bonnie Wilson, Pam Pitkin, Lisa Arians, Jason Heitland, Daniel Bredeson, Douglas Bredeson, Pat Hanson, Sheri Stufflebean, Dulcie Price, Tim Hanson, Kendra Amundson, and Kayla Meredith; twenty great-grand children, one sister Clara and her husband Herb Klasse, one brother Walter and his wife Great Aukes, and one sister-in-law
Margaret Heitland.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence, who died in 1979, one granddaughter Cindy Kotewa, and two infant grandsons.
Gladys will always be remembered for her smile and caring
ways for family and friends.
