MRS. J. D. PEPPER DIES AT SWEETWATER; FUNERAL SET TODAY

Sweetwater, Nov. 7 - Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning from the Church of Christ for Mrs. J. D. Pepper, 83, member of a pioneer Texas ranching family who died in a Sweetwater hospital shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Pepper was born Mary Ellen Armstrong on Nov. 21, 1864 in Pleasanton, Kansas. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. James Daniel Armstrong, who moved when she was very young to Vernon County, Missouri. From there, they came via covered wagon to Texas in 1860, settling on a ranch at Junction in Kimble County.

The marriage of Mary Ellen Armstrong and Jefferson Davis Pepper took place at Junction on Dec. 10, 1882. Mr. and Mrs. Pepper lived near Junction for several years, all of their children being born there.

About 1889, the Peppers moved to Rock Springs, and from there came to Sweetwater in 1926. Mr. Pepper bought ranch lands around Sweetwater, but he and Mrs. Pepper always lived in town.

Mr. Pepper died April 10, 1930.

Surviving are six children: George R. Pepper, Sr. of Roscoe, Mrs. H. Albert Shaw of Christoval, Mrs. David L. Cooper of Los Angeles, Claude A. Pepper, Sr. of San Antonio, Mrs. Maurice J. Hollins of Gallatin, Tenn., and John W. Pepper, Sr. of Sweetwater. There are 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one brother and three sisters.

Mrs. Pepper had belonged to the Church of Christ since early girlhood. Her funeral services will be conducted by F. B. Shepherd, minister of the Sweetwater church, and its elders and deacons will be the pallbearers, active and honorary.

The body was to lie in state at the home, 511 East Third, from Friday afternoon until funeral time. Burial will be in Sweetwater Cemetery with Wells Funeral Home directing.
