Bernard was 1 of 6 children of James & Margaret (Cottrell) Kennedy. He was born in Erie Co, PA. Family lore is that the Kennedy family worked on the Erie Canal.

Barney's siblings were:

1. John who was captured at Red River & held at Camp Ford, TX for 14 mos. After the war, back in Marshall County, he married and had 9 children.

2. Thomas who remained a bachelor and homesteaded near Shakespeare, NM.

3. Mary who never married and raised John's children after his wife died in 1881.

4. Anna (Gannon) who married, had 3 children and then moved to Colorado.

5. Cecilia (Bobbitt) who married, had 3 children and finally settled in Oklahoma.

On 24 Sep 1850 the family (his parents & siblings and his uncle John's family) were all living in Marshall Co, IL when the census was taken.

On 25 Dec 1863 "Barney" while in East Waterloo, Black Hawk So, Iowa, enlisted in the 16th Regiment, Company I of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served as a munitions wagon driver. Barney was at the Meridian raid & Vicksburg before going to Atlanta, GA. On 22 Jul 1864 Barney was wounded and captured in Atlanta.

Barney was then force marched to Andersonville where he died of his wounds on 11 Aug 1864.

Andersonville's death rate averaged 1160 Union soldiers a month or 38 soldiers a day for just the 14 months that the South allowed it to operate.

Note the family thought that Barney never married however Civil War pension files shows a Widow and a Minor. No names were shown.
