They had seven children during their fourteen years of marriage, three of whom died young. Emma died within a week or two after the birth of her seventh child, probably as a result of complications or infection following the birth.

Perrin, Esq., and daughter of James Blocker, late of Edgefield, leaving a bereaved husband, four children, a mother and three sisters."
Her grieving mother, Isabella Blocker, wrote in her prayer book on June 26, 1860, "This day one month ago, the precious babe was conveyed to heaven (Emma's child); since then the mother, my Emma, my darling precious daughter. O, thanks....to my heavenly Father, for his kind Providence" Five years later, her thoughts once again turned to her daughter and granddaughter with this entry: "Truth my beloved Emma is where no tears are shed.
