SUMMARY:

The author of this memorial is a descendant of the Gran family and would appreciate your help if you have knowledge of who is interned in Graves 1 and 2 of Lot 27 of the "Original Section" of this cemetery.

After viewing any of the links in this memorial, use the "Back" button on your internet browser to return to this memorial.

From the SDGENWEB database, which is the source of individual cemetery WPA Lists, there are two internments for "Gran" in Lot 27 without grave numbers. There is no indication of first name, gender, age or grave numbers.

There is a version of the Pre-1906 WPA list for Salem Community Cemetery which contains only those that were interned before 1906. However, when a date of death was not known, these were excluded from the pre-1906 list regardless of when death occurred. From the pre-1906 list, you will see that no "Gran" internments are included which means that either DOD was unknown or after 1906. Please note that Ole Gunderson DOD 1898 is included in Lot 26 Grave 3.

From current cemetery records:
+ Surname: "Gran"
+ First name: "Mrs"

The current availability of more information than the WPA list includes is an indication that cemetery records include more information than is included on the WPA list.

This memorial was created on July 28, 2015 for Mrs Gran interned in Grave 2 Lot 27 of the "Original Section" of this cemetery.

DETAILS:

If you search SD WPA Grave Registration Project, circa 1940, cemetery records for Turner County by entering:
+ Last Name = Gran
+ County = Turner

The results include two "Gran's" in Lot 27 of Salem Community Cemetery without a first name.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you search Salem Community Cemetery current cemetery records for "Gran", two listings are found in the "Original Section" of this Cemetery, right after "Grandma":
Lot Grave . . Last . . . . First . . . . . DOD . . Photo
26 . . 3 . . Gunderson . Ole . . . . . . 1898 . . Yes
27 . . 1 . . Gran M . . . Child . . . . . . . . . . . . No
27 . . 2 . . Gran . . . . . Mrs .. . . . . . . . . . . . No
27 . . 3 . . Rye .. . . . . Mrs Lars .. . . . . . . . . No
Above includes a map of the cemetery and Grave 1 is in the NW corner of each Lot. It appears that Lot 27 only contains three graves.
The results include links to headstone photo(s) if available. Of the above, a photo is only available for Ole Gunderson (1827 ~ 1898) in Lot 26 Grave 3 of the "Original Section".
It is suspected that the interment in Lot 27 Grave 2 is "Mrs. Ludvig Gran" aka Syverine Gran. There is no record that Ludvig & Syverine had a child death but adjacent interments are always suspect.
Syverine (Barth) Gran died in Turner County in 1898, the same year as Ole Gunderson was interned nearby in Grave 3 of Lot 26. Assuming the headstone is buried under sod or doesn't exist, Ole's headstone and the cemetery map should greatly help locating the location of this grave.
The internment of "Mrs Lars Rye" in Lot 27, Grave 3 is also interesting because Orinel Grace Rye aka Anna b1877, the wife of Ludvig & Syverine Gran's youngest son Christopher Gran b1873, died "many years before 1926" according to Ludvig's letter to his parents in Norway dated Jan 14, 1902. The location of burial of Orinel (Rye) Gran is also unknown.
