Irene was Hal's first and third wife. He spent maybe five years of his life with her if you add the first and third marriage. Her maiden name was Irene T. Hoeven. His second wife, Ila Pearson Walker was my great aunt. Hal was the superstar of our family being a Hollywood director and getting Christmas cards from Bing Crosby every year and knowing Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis from the films he directed. He worked for Paramount and I learned later in life that he was considered a "traffic-cop" director, a person who makes sure everything is working on the set with little input from his artistic direction. He was never comfortable outside of Hollywood, probably always comparing his later life to what he knew to be the Hollywood of the 1920s, 1930s 1940s. He was pretty much finished as a director in 1947 but he did do some television (which he hated because he thought it was responsible for the demise of Hollywood). He directed My Friend Irma on TV in the early 1950s when I was about 6 years old. I remember him only in his retirement which he didn't handle very well. What money he had in his retirement was due to my aunt's doing. I really don't know how much money they had but my parents were to inherit it after his dealth (Ila died a few years earlier). However, Irene came from his past (I didn't even know he was married before) married him again and inherited all of his money that my parents could have used. He was a selfish kind of guy. He only married Irene because she was a retired nurse who could give him his pain medication for cancer. He lived another year before he died. Kind of a sad story in many ways now that I reflect upon it.
