Charles W. Arbogast, 69, New Baden, former chief of police and former city treasurer here, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese at 9:10 o'clock yesterday morning. He had been ill for six weeks and death followed an operation performed five weeks ago.

Mr. Arbogast was elected city treasurer in 1921 and served two years. In 1923, he was appointed chief of police, holding the position six years under the administration of the late Mayor Joseph J. Anton. In 1922, he was the Farmer-Labor Party's unsuccessful candidate for sheriff and four years late he ran without success for the Republican nomination for county treasurer.

Before entering politics, Mr. Arbogast operated Dittle's Hotel and Buffet at Main Street and Mascoutah Avenue. After leaving the police department, he was appointed an attendant at Alton State Hospital. He left the state employ in 1942 and moved to New Baden. At the time of his death, he was village treasurer of New Baden.

Mr. Arbogast was born in Shiloh Valley township, December 12, 1873 and was a son of the late Peter and Margaret Arbogast, nee Weber, both natives of Germany. He was twice married. His first wife was Catherine Zinck and they were married in Summerfield, June 2, 1896. She died August 10, 1942. Last June 15, he married Mrs. Katie Sauter in St. Louis.

Besides his widow, he leaves two sons: Arthur W. Arbogast, St. Louis and Clarence C. Arbogast, Davenport, Ia.; a grandchild and the following brothers and sisters: Philip Arbogast, Belleville; Peter Arbogast, St. Louis; John Arbogast, Granite City; Albert Arbogast, Belleville; Walter Arbogast, Granite City; Mrs. Salome Iten, Belleville; Mrs. Emma Goetz, O'Fallon and Mrs. Margaret Heidorn, St. Louis.
