He was an attorney in general practice, a graduate of Vanderbilt College of Law, Nashville, 1893. He was secretary-treasurer of Boogher, Force & Goodbar Hat Co., wholesale dealers; also secretary, Ross-Gould Directory Co. of St. Louis.

On 31 October 1901 he married Bessie Lane in Hillsboro, Illinois.
