Margariete McMikle Shibley, 92, passed away at home, surrounded by her family on Monday, July 13, 2015.

She was born on August 22, 1922, in East Prairie, Missouri, to Joseph and Sally (Black) McMikle. While in high school, she played the french horn, and was a forward on the East Prairie Eagles Women’s Basketball team that won the State Championship in 1941.

She attended Southeast Missouri State College in Cape Girardeau, MO, from 1941-44 with a Major in Teaching.
She was baptized in the Catholic Church on November 8, 1945, at St. Henry’s in Charleston, MO, and married her high school sweetheart, Edward Shibley, on February 23, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Church in New Madrid, MO.

Multi-talented, diligent, athletic and stylish throughout her life, she was an employee of Falkoff Department Store, taught grades 1st-4th at Union Grove Elementary School, and was Kindergarten assistant at New Madrid Elementary School.
Together as co-owner with Edward, they opened City Walgreen Drug Store in New Madrid, later adding another drug store in East Prairie, where she managed the cosmetics, fine gifts and jewelry, and a bridal registry.

Following Edward’s death and the sale of the drug stores, she became manager of Dawson’s Villa Discount, and later receptionist and bookkeeper at the Bank of New Madrid. A devoted grandparent, she moved to the Chattanooga area to become “Gee” to two beautiful granddaughters.

She held the positions of Receptionist at Fletcher Bright Realtors and Rossville Federal Savings and Loan, and later became a ladies fashion salesperson at Lille Rubin Designer, Fashioners.

The family returned to the Memphis area and she became Assistant Office Manager at Helen of Memphis, and when the store closed she was hired by Con-Agra, verifying contracts and confirmations, and then later at Fedex office, balancing payments and receipts.

She left her work arena to assist in caring for her mother and sister in Missouri, and to enjoy and attend the many school, sport and dance activities and babysit for her “Grands” -two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, and several furry grandchildren. A talented cook, she delighted all with homemade pies, cakes, Lebanese and Southern family favorites.

An avid basketball enthusiast, she followed the Memphis State Tigers basketball team intensely, enjoyed many sightseeing adventures, and wonderful trips to visit family and friends, casino adventures and completed her bucket list with a cruise with her sister-in-law and her attendance at “The Price is Right”, meeting Bob Barker.

She was dealt with early tragedies with the loss of her husband, Edward, and son, Michael Edward and brother, Billy (age 5 of the home). She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Sally McMikle, two sisters, Eldoris Daniel, Charleston, MO, Leola Roach, Bloomington, IN, three brothers, Willard McMikle, Sikeston, MO, Elgin McMikle, Charleston, MO, and Billy McMikle, East Prairie, MO.

She is survived by her loving family, daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Amelia and William D (Bill) Whigham, Jr, of Piperton, TN, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Dr. Ashley and Wes Anderson of Collierville, TN, granddaughter Dr. Amy Shibley Whigham of Winston-Salem, NC, great-grandchildren, Bailey and Reece Overby , of Collierville, TN, dearest family friends, Jeannie Harrington and Jeannette Haubold, many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews and loving caregivers Suzy Latham, Cynthia Jones, Brashunna Echols, Lennette Otis, Shirley Carpenter, Cassenia Davis, and Patricia George.

The family requests that donations be made to Immaculate Conception Church and School or to a charity of your choice.
