On June 28, 1939, Dean married Mildred Lorene Maxwell in Altoona, KS. In November of 1939, Dean and Mildred settled on their farm north of Erie.
When World War II broke out, Dean was drafted into the Army and was assigned to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. At the end of the war, he returned home to farm for the next 40 years. In 1976, he received the Kansas Bankers Association Award for conservation farming.
In 1990, he and Mildred moved to Chanute where he began repairing bicycles. He became known affectionately as the “bicycle man” throughout the area.
Dean was preceded in death by parents, wife, Mildred, six brothers: Clarence, Forest, Carl, Harry, Roy and Ray Aikins, and a sister, Evelena Thompson, daughter, Alice Barnhart and three grandsons: Kenny Paillete, Joe Barnhart and Jim Ledbetter, son-in-law, Bob Paillete.
He is survived by two sons: Russell Dean Aikins, Jr. and wife Sandra of Plano, Texas and David Merle Aikins and wife Linda of Lawrence, KS, a daughter, Sharon Kay Paillete of Topeka, KS, son-in-law, Howard Barnhart, nine grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Countryside Funeral Home-Gibson Chapel on 16 N. Forest in Chanute. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home Gibson Chapel. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Chanute.
Family requests memorials to Cherry Street Youth Center and may be mailed to the funeral home at 101 N. Highland, Chanute, KS.
