Clarence Arkfeld was born June 5, 1920 at Defiance. His father was Joe Arkfeld, born April 15, 1884 at Panama and his mother was Theresa Siemer , born November 8, 1889 at Templeton. Clarence has one brother, Tony, and two sisters, Angeline Anastasi and Leona Kohl. He received his schooling at St. Paul's, Defiance.
He married Anna Marie Schmieding, who was born at Panama on December 6, 1922. Anna Marie's father was Henry Schmieding, born March IS, 1897 at Westphalia, and her mother was Anna WaIters Schmieding, born May 14, 1897. Her brother is Henry Schmieding Jr. and her four sisters are: Lucille Michalski, Marieta Andersen, Margaret McDonald and Betty Cox.
Clarence and Anna Marie have eight children: Delores A. Hoffman, Ronald, Gerald, Dennis, David, Joseph, Marylee, and Mark. Gerald Arkfeld, Spec.4, was in the Army November S, 1968-August IS, 1970; he was in the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam, carried radio for platoon captain, then later became squad captain. Dennis now owns and lives on the three generations Arkfeld farm.
Before retirement and moving to Harlan, Clarence and Anna Marie were very active in St. Peter's Church affairs and assisted in many church projects.
