COOPERS PLAINS, N.Y. — Alford, Raymond Neil, 79, of Coopers Plains, NY died peacefully Sunday, March 10, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Union City, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late George and Anna Alford.

Mr. Alford served in the U.S. Army's 313th Communication Battalion during the Korean War where he received the National Defense Medal.

He was a scholar athlete and honors graduate of Union City High School's class of 1951 and a 1960 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, where he was fifth in his class and a member of Penn State's Pi Tau Sigma National Honorary Mechanical Engineering Fraternity.

Mr. Alford began his career as Junior Engineer in 1960 at Dresser Rand (formally Ingersoll Rand). While at Dresser Rand he managed gas engine design and development in the Gas Compressor Group and coordinated all gas engine programs to meet project objectives for manufacturability.

He was a co-inventor of several patents; authored several professional articles on engineering innovation; and was member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Mr. Alford retired after 34 years as Vice President of Engineering Process/Compressor Division in 2000.

He was the devoted father of David N. Alford (Lisa), Cindy (William) Alford, Mary Ann (James) Doyle and 777the beloved grandfather of Lindsay and Matthew Doyle.

He was the loving companion of 32 years to Dianne Roe. He is also survived by his siblings, George Nelson Alford, Robert (Ellen) Alford, Ann Sokolowski, and Martha Williamson.

He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Anderson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 12:00 pm from the Acly-Stover Funeral Home, Corning, NY with Pastor Connie Constance Sceifert officiating.

Relatives, friends and colleagues are invited to pay their respects from 10:00 am to noon.

Committal prayers and interment will follow with full military honors in Chapel Knoll Cemetery, Painted Post, NY.

Donations may be made in Ray's name to the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, 2435 State Route 352, Elmira, New York 14903.
