Holbrook Working, professor emeritus of economics and former associate director of the Food Research Institute at Stanford University, died Saturday at the Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto after a brief illness. He was 90.


Mr. Working became associate director of the food institute in 1952 and retired in 1960.


In 1981, he was given the Samuel S. Wilkes award by the American Statistics Association for his pioneer work in statistics. The Holbrook Working Endowment Professorship in Commodity Price Studies was established in Mr. Working's honor at Stanford in 1976 in recognition of his work in commodity price analyses.


A native of Fort Collins, Colo., he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Denver, a master's degree in 1919 from Cornell University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1920.


Mr. Working taught at Cornell and the University of Minnesota before coming to Stanford as a professor of prices and statistics in 1925.


During World War II, he served in the Fourth Air Force and was chief statistician of the Office of Production, Research and Development for the War Production Board. He also served as director of production, research and development of the government's Quality Control Program.


He is survived by his [second] wife, Elisabeth Crenshaw Working of Stanford; a son, John W. Working of Palo Alto; two daughters, Barbara Milligan of Palo Alto and Elizabeth Swift of Seattle, Wash., and nine grandchildren.


A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Stanford Memorial Church on Stanford's campus. The family suggests contributions to the Stanford Food Research Institute, Holbrook Working Fellowship Fund in Commodities, Stanford University, Stanford 94305.
