Mrs. Grace Evans, 76, of 125 Sterling street, who was found lying alongside the Chicago & Northwestern railway right-of-way next to her home Wednesday noon, passed away at Mercy hospital yesterday afternoon at 4.15 o'clock. An autopsy revealed that death was caused by multiple fractures of the pelvis with hemorrhage and shock, but the exact manner in which she received the injuries was not officially determined.
She had been shoveling the sidewalk in front of her home and relatives advanced the theory that she was struck by a northbound passenger train as it passed. The train was stopped and trainmen took Mrs. Evans to her home. Police took her to Mercy hospital in the city ambulance several hours later. It was reported that at first Mrs. Evans declined to accept medical attention.
There were apparently no witnesses to the accident and Dr. G. A. Steele, county coroner, announced there will be no inquest.
Mrs. Grace Eveline Evans was born Nov. 7, 1368. in Janesville. Her husband, the late Walter J. Evans, was an engineer on the Chicago & Northwestern railroad for 20 years. The couple had lived .in Manitowoc and Green Bay. Mr. Evans died in 1920 and Mrs. Evans came to live in Oshkosh and had resided here since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Evans were married in 1895 in Oshkosh.
Surviving are two sisters. Mrs. Emma MacDonald, Oshkosh. and Mrs. Aloha Brook. Green Bay. and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Spikes & McDonald funeral home. The Rev. C. B. Cunningham will officiate. Interment wilt be in Riverside cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday evening and up to the hour of service.
