She was the daughter of Julia Mary Bowen Amory and Rev. Mark Antony DeWolfe Howe, who later became bishop of the diocese of Central Pennsylvania. Mary married Rev. W. Hobart Hare on October 30, 1861. Together they had one son Hobart Amory Hare before she died in 1866 at age 28.
