ITHACA - Jean Marshall McElwee passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2005. She had spent the last few years of her life at Oak Hill Manor.

She was born on May 28, 1917 in Syracuse, NY, and lived her entire life in Upstate New York, the last 63 years in Ithaca. She was the daughter of Mabel Goodwin and Earl Jason Smith.

A 1939 graduate of Cornell University with a B.S. in Education, she taught school in Oswego, NY, before returning to Ithaca in the early 1940's. She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Newman Marshall; second husband, Andrew William McElwee; and brother, Earl J. Smith, Jr. For many years she served as vice president of the family business, Marshall Brothers Hatchery.

She was active in hospital organizations, being a member of the Tompkins County Hospital Board of Trustees and serving as president of the Young Women's Hospital Aid. She was also a member of Mary Hibbard Aid, an organization of volunteers for the Reconstruction Home. She was a director of the Women's Community Building and sat on the board during the fund raising campaign for the current building. She also belonged to the Ithaca Country Club and the Ithaca Yacht Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Marshall of Ithaca; a son, John Marshall of Smyrna, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Maureen Marshall; and a grandson, Ben Marshall, both of Smyrna, Georgia; and a brother, Paul Smith of King Ferry.

She is also survived by five stepchildren and their families, William and Martin McElwee, both of Ithaca, Jane McElwee Decker of North Carolina, Andrea McElwee of Florida and Kathryn McElwee of California.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 15, at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Flowers are graciously declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert N. Marshall Memorial Poultry Scholarship Fund at Cornell University, 272 Roberts Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853. Arrangements are by the E.C. Wagner Funeral Home of Ithaca.
