Captain Francis Cummins married Jean (1749-1808) about 1769 in Guilford County, NC.

In 1766, there was a land transfer where Thomas Donnell sold Francis Cummins, for five shillings, four hundred acres of land on a branch of the South Buffalo Creek. Francis and his family joined Buffalo Presbyterian Church about this time. (Actual Church History.)

After 1775, Francis was selected to serve on the Guilford County District Jury that not only heard court cases, but also helped to probate wills, approve land transfers as well as approve other county business.

One of the cases that Francis served on was to view and lay off the Cape Fear Road and make a report to the court as to the route it should follow. (source: The History of Guilford County, NC 1902 by Sallie Walker Stockard).

Actual church history of the members of Buffalo Presbyterian Church is the source of some of this information. Capt Cummins is also mentioned in The History of Guilford County, NC by Sallie Walker Stockard. His will was probated in the Guilford County Court of 1800.

Once again, his will was probated in Guilford County, NC in February Court, 1800. It was written on October 30, 1792. It made provisions for the children who may still be minors at the time if his death.

The Will named:
His wife, Jane Cummins (also known as Jean) to receive the plantation plus other household and livestock.
His daughter, Anna Cummins (Mebane)
His daughter, Martha Cummins
His daughter, Thankful Cummins (Armfield)
His son, Thomas Cummins
His son, Elijah Cummins.

Executors of the will were Jean Cummins, John Foster and Thomas Black.
The Witnesses were Thomas Cummins (a brother) and Col. Daniel Gillespie.

No other children are named, however, Francis and Mary Ann, were thought to live out of state AT THIS TIME so they probably received some other share. NO OTHER NAMES HAVE BEEN MENTIONED FOR THIS FAMILY. ALSO THE AGES ARE COMFIRMED BY WILLS, CHURCH HISTORIES AND GUILFORD COUNTY RECORDS.

A more complete list of his children was compiled from the will and church history:

Francis Cummins, Jr - became a Presbyterian minister.
Anne Cummins Mebane 1770-1844 (73 at death)
Martha Cummins 1772-
Thomas Cummins 1774-1813 (39 at death)
Elijah Cummins 1777-1819 (42 at death)
Mary Ann Cummins McKnight - 1781-1826 (45 at death)
Thankfull Cummins Armfield 1786-1859 (73 at death)

*****The ages for this family are thought to be correct as Anne Cummins Mebane was 73 years old when she died in 1844. She and Thankfull are buried with some of their family at the historic First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. Their tombstones still stand, but time is taking a toll on them. Anne's obituary was in the Greensboro Patriot, the local newspaper.
***The son, Thomas Cummins, had his will probated in Guilford County in the November Court of 1813. He included his sister and her husband in the will with David Mebane acting as an executor. He also names his mother, Jean Cummins to still receive support from what is grown and sold from the family land.
***Elijah Cummins's burial is recorded for the Armfield-Millis Cemetery (also known as Piney-Grove Cemetery) in Southwest Guilford County. Thankfull was married to Solomon Armfield Sr. so Elijah is buried with extended family.
