NORTH CHARLESTON - Willie May Basham Varian Smith, 91, went home to be with her Lord and loved ones on Monday, Feb. 4, 2002.
Born July 4, 1910, in Streeter, she was the daughter of the late Issac Edmond and Sarah Margaret Farley Basham.
She was a born-again Christian and a former member of the Baptist Temple, Charleston. She also attended Charleston Mountain Mission with her daughter and son-in-law when possible.
Mrs. Smith was a former employee of Coyle and Richardson Department Store and the DuPont Hotel, Charleston. She was a member of The Jolly Seniors, Daughters of the American Revolution, Eagles Club, Charleston Moose Lodge and Appalachian Fidlers Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur D. Varian; seven sisters, Anna Belle Williams, Mary Etta Epperly, Myrtle Melissa Fischer, Charlotte Elizabeth Woods, Macy Lee Basham Richardson, Monnie Beatrice Basham and twin sister Dollie Faye Hall Huffman; and four brothers, Luther Calvin Basham, William Arthur Basham, Walter Farley and Beecher Meadows.
She will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Thelma Varian Cain and D.W. "Bill" Bunting of Charleston; son and daughter-in-law, William and Macy Lee Richardson Lilly Varian of Fayetteville, N.C.; brother, Dennie Farley of Beckley; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro, with the Rev. Fairley McCormick officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Sissonville.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today a the funeral home.
