HILBERT - Robert J., of Gilgo Beach, NY, formerly of Amityville, NY, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2015 at the Hospice Inn with family and friends at his side.

Robert was born July 9, 1957 to Frances and James Hilbert. He attended the University of Tampa but in 1985, together with his brother Edward, became the second generation of brothers to own and operate the Gilgo Beach Inn; purchasing the Inn from their father James, and uncle Joseph, continuing the Hilbert family legacy.

Together with his brother Edward handling the customers at the counter and Robert the business operations and the grill, the Gilgo Beach Inn continued to be the friendly destination of choice for people to meet at the beach. Working at the Inn was considered a prized summer job providing a positive influence to the many lucky young first-time workers. Leading by example, the two generations of Hilbert brothers showed each employee how valuable a strong work ethic and pleasant customer interaction is to the success of a business. It made his day to see a customer with an older Gilgo logo tee shirt show up at the counter.

Robert felt lucky to also call Gilgo his home. Evenings after work, Robert would head out on his boat to breathe in the sea air. He felt lucky to live and work in such a beautiful environment.

Robert was loved by many and will always be remembered for his kind heart, determination, and his willingness to help others. His smile brightened the life of anyone who met him. He dedicated over half his life as a sponsor, unselfishly helping others through their most challenging times. Robert cherished the many strong and meaningful friendships he made over the years. His determination was evident in his desire to make the Inn a success and in his fight against cancer. Lovingly, Robert enjoyed his role as the favorite Uncle and Great Uncle. He will be truly missed by all.

He is survived by his beloved mother Frances, sisters Margaret and Mary, brothers Edward and Michael. He is also survived by nieces Allison, Jaisle, and Jamie; nephews Edward, James, and Jake and their children, Robert, RJ, Ryleigh, Kellyanne, Liam, Juliette, James, and Myles.

He was predeceased by his father, James and brother, John.

Services held at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, NY. Interment at Sarasota Memorial Park, Sarasota, FL.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Robert's memory by performing an act of kindness in his name with a donation to Hospice Care Network, Hospice Inn, Melville, NY or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY, NY.
