He was the son of Joel and Ruth (Terrill) Sherman of Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Abel Sherman (Joel ) was christened on 21 Oct 1744 in First Congregational Church, Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut.
Abel Sherman was killed by Indians near Dead Man's Run. He was searching for a lost cow and had located a patch of ripe mayapples and was collecting them to bring back to the children at Fort Frye. His son Ezra heard the fatal shot and discovered his fathers dead, scalped body. Abel was buried on the spot the next day. His remains were later moved to the Pioneer cemetery (previously called Round Bottom). His original headstone was donated to the Campus Martius Museum, where it is now on display it has a soul effigy and reads in 18th century style. Here lyes the body of Abel Shirman who fell by the hand of the savage on the 15th of Auguft 1794, and in the 50th year of hif age.
His new headstone at the Round Bottom cemetery reads the same in 20th century style but and additional line at the end reads Soldier American Revolution.
In the summer of 1798, a half breed Indian told a group of men that he had killed an old man gathering apples and had sold his scalp to the British. One of the men was Abel's son, Ezra. The Indian, named Silverheels, was never seen again.
Abel married Lucy Foote daughter of John Foote and Amy Seeley about 1764 in Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Lucy was born in 1747 in Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut. She died on 18 Mar 1839 in Washington County, Ohio. She was buried in Beverly Cemetery, Washington County, Ohio.
