John was born in Honea Path, Anderson County, South Carolina son of the late, Dr. Thomas A. and Ella Gaines Hudgens; husband of Sara Smythe Hudgens; father of two daughters, Mrs. Stephen Uzzell from Jamaica, L.I; Mrs. Eno Camenzind from Flat Rock; three sons, John Hudgens from Cherryville, Smythe Hudgens of the Merchant Marines and Thomas Hudgens from Norris dam.

He was a salesman for the International Fertilizer Company; was a former president of the Asheville Production Credit Association; was a former member of the Henderson County School Board and former director of the Farmers Federation.

Besides his wife and children he was survived by three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wardlaw from New York City, Mrs. J.W. Payne from Cherryville, Mrs. L.L. Wright from Honea Path and several grandchildren.
