Known in the family as "Walton," Robert Walton Adams was the youngest of five children. Family legend claims that he had tuberculosis as a young man and that this condition motivated his mother Amanda to leave Kentucky and move with him and his older sister, Evie Lee, to San Antonio (ca. 1901-02). This legend appears to be confirmed by his actual death certificate, which lists "tuberculosis" as his cause of death.

Evie Lee married, had children, and is buried in San Antonio. Walton, however, never married; so when he died in 1916, Amanda had his body returned to their family plot in Clinton, where his sister Jennie and his father were already buried.
